Instructor, Kris Kreitman
Lecture #1 (1-3pm) Mediums and Methods of the "Old Masters" - Materials/Demo A brief discussion of the traditional materials, special mediums and their methods of application as used by the "Old Masters". We will cover substrates, sizing, and ground preparation, various grounds and their appropriate uses. I will demonstrate a glue size preparation. Next we will discuss traditional oil paint ,it's constituent components, vehicle and pigments, and their qualities and uses in regard to creating images. We will spend some time going over the more obscure traditional mediums used by artists from the "Renaissance" to the 19th and early 20th century, their effect on paint an the remarkable qualities they can produce in the hands of a Master. Three traditional ways of beginning a painting is next on our agenda. I will demonstrate the beginning of Bistre, Grisaille, and sealed imprimatura. Lastly I will demonstrate the use of Dammar varnish to seal a painting.

Lecture #2 (1-3pm) Elements of Classical Composition and the Four Major Methods of Traditional Oil Painting
In this lecture, we will discuss what constitutes Classical Composition and how paintings were designed in ages past. Our discussion will include the Golden Ratio and its origins, the system of Root Rectangles, the Harmonic Grid and how to draw it. Several other compositional rules which improve the composition of a painting, such as the "Steelyard" method, focal points and centers of interest and the difference between them contrasts, tangents, dynamic balance, rule of thirds, the Japanese concept of "Notan" and tonal dynamics and the "Claude Lorraine Glass". In the final segment, we will discuss the evolution of the four main methods of traditional oil painting, the differences and similarities between them and the reasons for them, and show some examples of each.

Lecture #3 (1-3pm) Lesser known "Old Masters"
Materials Demonstration

Some of the "Old Masters" more obscure materials have a charm all their own in the course of this lecture and demonstration. We will learn how to prepare a nonferrous metal surface for painting and why we would want to. Then we will explore the technique of starting a painting with an "Abozzo"underpainting (sometimes called a verdigris or verdaccio). Finally, we will mix up a 5lb cut of Dammar varnish from actual Dammar crystals. Then we will use some of this to create Beeswax/Dammar medium, the secret thicksotropic painting medium of the 16th century. 11/28, 12/5, 12/12 Members $50 Non-Member $$70

Discover the potential of the medium and learn how to harness it to create the lifelike, three dimensional scene on the two dimensional surface.
